Bloodletting was once the treatment for almost all maladies and, when carried out in moderation, caused little harm. This chapter includes a discussion of therapeutic phlebotomy but is mainly concerned with the withdrawal of blood or its constituent parts from healthy donors for transfusion to patients. The chapter addresses qualification of the donor, statistics regarding collection and use, blood shortages and conditions that disqualify donors. Complications of blood donation including iron loss, syncope and needle injuries, and other less common adverse events are discussed. Some applications of therapeutic phlebotomy and blood withdrawal during neonatal exchange transfusion are outlined.

Dr Bridget Maher It's the silly season again; strawberries, salmon, Pimm's and fresh lettuce. Topping it all off is the summer feast of sport. Until recently, I never thought very much about sport. I always viewed sport as something separate and distinct, something that was neatly slotted and compartmented into our lives. Now I see the myriad of invisible threads that link sport to all aspects of our lives and link us with our fellow beings. Sport is another dimension, a parallel reality, another state of existence, the essence of being. Sport is where you can reinvent yourself, and channel your dreams, joys, hopes and aspirations. Sport is a sense of belonging, a sense of self, an intuitive and natural fulfilment. Sport is the universal thread which joins country to country and continent to continent. Munster rugby is a perfect example; the passion and pride of Munster supporters could win wars. From little children playing softball to grannies in their whites on the bowling greens; Australia is a nation that has always recognised the importance of sport, not only for the physical benefits but for the wealth of other psychological and character-building benefits. Children, boys in particular, love the competitiveness of sport; they thrive on that primal push to win. There is also the sense of belonging, the camaraderie, the sharing, the sense of fair play, virtues that are instilled in the sports field when they cannot be instilled in the classroom. Even passive sport, i.e. watching the world cup on TV, shouldn't be knocked. OK, while the consumption of beer and pizza may be high, isn't it wonderful to just get caught up in the cosmopolitan razzmatazz that is world class soccer? Isn't it wonderful to see guys at the peak of their fitness demonstrate agility, speed, skill and talent? Soccer is only part of it what about the thrill of a Munster final, watching that sliotar slice the air in the sport of kings? Watching a good hurling game is a primeval thrill akin to powerful music. Then, of course, we have tennis and the rush of centre court Wimbledon. Life today is far from happy despite the nation's riches. People are too caught up in their own lives and perpetually want for more, always comparing their lot with others. Any sport is distraction from all this idle consumerism. The buildup to a big sporting event can lift a nation. Sport is good for mental well-being. Sport empties doctors' waiting rooms. Sport is being in the now, sport is in living in the moment. It's power and potential need to be recognised and tapped into. The IRFU, the GAA, the FAI and all the other Irish sporting bodies should be congratulated for their commitment to sport but it is time that the Irish Government looked at the big picture. We need to increase the profile of sports in schools and in the community. The obesity epidemic alone is good enough reason. Swimming pools, cycle lanes and walking paths are all areas that could be developed. We need to get the message out that being active in sports in secondary and third level education does not hinder a student's academic performance but enhances it. There exists a state of existence where we work and worry in the `real' world and then there is the alternate parallel state of sport, where we re-invent ourselves as being happy, healthy, positive and fulfilled. How less `real' is sport to our `real' world? `Beauty is truth, truth beauty That is all you know on earth and all you need to know.' Substitute sport for beauty and it all makes sense and piracetam.

From the Editor Continued. I'm sure you read the column by Beth Katz, our outgoing President. Beth has done a remarkable job as president these past two years. FSG has a very stable financial footing, as has the various chapters. She has organized the procedures and methods in FSG. We are also working within a well defined budget because of Beth. I'd be remiss if I also didn't say she could not have done it without Jean Marie. The two have worked well together. I'm sure you also noted that I will be president as of the next Board of Directors meeting to be held September 16th-17th. I have plans to continue to keep FSG financially firm and working within a strict budget. We are also exploring how we can offer more scholarships to more students. One of our primary purposes for existing is to help educate. I a very big believer in education. I would like to give more scholarships to younger individuals. There is some question as to liability concerning various younger age groups. So, this is something we intend to look into. Did you know that in excess of 30% of our membership lives outside of the state of Florida? Including me! Although I'm a native Floridian, I now live in the North Georgia mountains. I think there are also a few that live outside of the United States. The point I'm getting to, is we are very close to becoming a national organization. It won't take too many more out of state members to exceed 50% membership that is listed At-Large. Phil London, at Wildacres, pointed out that we had students attending Wildacres from 13 different states. That is 25% of the United States represented at Wildacres this past June. Don't forget we still have a few openings available in Mountain Metalsmithing workshops at William Holland. The dates are August 27th-September 2, 2006. I hope to see you there. Several people have asked me if I intend to continue as editor of this newsletter. I do, for the time being, It is not very difficult and it has given me a chance to see what is happening in FSG. I also able to stay in contact with quit a few of our fellow members by being the editor. However, if someone is interested in being editor, I would be willing to give it up and let FSG get another volunteer. I've always enjoyed volunteering in various organizations and I would like to see more volunteers in FSG. I've made many friends through this organization and I'd like to make many more. Please feel free to contact me, or anyone else in FSG and offer your services and friendship. We do want you and premphase.
Acquired haemophilia is a rare clinical condition with high mortality and morbidity. Long-term morbidity due to bleeding and immunosuppression may be severe, and cost of recurrent treatment with expensive therapies may be considerable. No standard treatment protocol has been defined, neither for treatment of acute bleeds, nor for immunosuppression. Therapy therefore often needs to be tailored to the individual. Since some haemostatic treatment options are very expensive, the most potent haemostatic agent may not always be considered to be the first treatment of choice, especially considering the age and general health status of the patient. In order to attain more knowledge registries of these rare patients were developed. Recently EACH European Acquired Haemophilia ; registry, sponsored by Novo Nordisk, was developed to increase the number of patients for evaluation of treatment strategies in acute bleeds and eradication therapy 4 ; . A midterm analysis of the data revealed some missing information regarding treatment modalities and efficacy definition. Therefore a slight revision has taken place and the homepage for the new registry is reached on each2.registry 5 ; . The existing data collected from the previous EACH will be validated and transferred to the new registry. Which patients can be registered? All patients with acquired haemophilia A diagnosed after January 1 2003 may be included in the Registry. The patients will be treated according to local practice. No additional tests or procedures are required. Data will be collected from the hospital records. It is our intention that all such patients in the Nordic countries should be registered. Who can register? Members of this working group of the Nordic Guidelines as well as the heads of the coagulation centres in the Nordic countries have access for registration. Moreover, any clinician approved by somebody in the above mentioned group of persons can register. The clinician will define his or her own password. The password will expire periodically, so regular changes will be required. Ethics Regarding the Swedish patients the previous EACH Registry was approved by the Ethics Committee in Lund D No.77 2004 ; . Contact with the Committee in November 2006 regarding EACH2 confirmed the previous decision taken by the board in March 2004, that is: The board provided its acceptance of the described investigation from an ethical point of view seeing that the register includes patients who explicitly consent to be registered, the application is not covered by the act 230: 460 ; . The present update, EACH2, does not change this decision. The current patient information was updated on December 7, 2006. Approval by the national ethics committees in the other Nordic countries will be sought according to their requirements. It should be noted that informed consent has to be obtained from the patient before data can be entered.

Parental presence during induction of anesthesia `PPIA' Some of the original papers suggested that there is increased cooperation and reduced anxiety in children when their parents accompanied them to operation room. Parents of premedicated children who were present during induction were significantly more satisfied with the overall medical care provided to their children as compared to parents of premedicated children who were not allowed to be present during induction.13 However recent studies show that the only subgroup that demonstrated clear-cut benefit included children over the age of four years with calm personalities and calm mothers.6, 13 In addition, disadvantages like disruption of operation room routine, sterile contamination, parental anxiety, and increased and proscar and ovral, for instance, ofral pill.

And transmission Baskys et al., 1992 ; . Cerebrolysin also improves learning and behaviour in animal experiments. Cerebrolysin reduces the formation of cerebral oedema after bilateral carotid artery occlusion in animal experiments Kofler et al., 1989 ; . It can compensate for deficits in spatial orientation in rats. Akai et al., 1992 ; showed in experiments with transsection of fimbria-fornix that peripheral chronic application of cerebrolysin is able to rescue more than 60% of the cholinergic neurones in the medial septal nucleus. This protective effect is highly significant. In healthy volunteers, as well as in animal experiments, cerebrolysin has measurable effects on cerebral function and electroencephalogram EEG ; [Trojanova et al., 1975; Windisch et al., 1985]. The preclinical findings of cerebrolysin led to a number of clinical trials which showed the efficacy of cerebrolysin in neurological diseases Trojanova et al., 1975; Windisch et al., 1985; Albrecht et al., 1992; Kofler et al., 1990 ; . There are currently 11 placebo-controlled double-blind trials and 36 clinical trials, including more than 2800 documented patients. Our study group also decided to conduct a clinical trial of cerebrolysin in patients with vascular dementia. The aim of this trial was to determine whether or not cerebrolysin is able to improve the clinical symptomatology and the cognitive performance of patients with vascular dementia.
